Coalgate Wildcats 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Safeguard Insurance

COALGATE WILDCATS

Coach: ZAC CARTER

2-8

OFFENSE

The Wildcats have a renewed sense of purpose entering the 2023 campaign as Zac Carter takes the reins as head coach.  Offensively, Coalgate will anchor its success around the talents of four returning starters to help develop game changers in the spread attack. It all starts up front where Landon Hopkins (6-2, 230, Sr.) brings his agility and strength to the battles on the line of scrimmage along with Mack Rogers (6-6, 285, Jr.) whose size gives protection to the Wildcats offensive scheme. Buster Ratcliff (6-1, 150, Jr.) steps into the spotlight at quarterback as a dual threat pass-run talent. When the ball goes in the air, Tristin Trevathan (6-1, 150, Jr.), Zeak Marlow (6-2, 200, Jr.) and Tate Brown (6-2, 150, Jr) will be the primary targets.

“We’re young but definitely eager to create excitement,” said Carter.

DEFENSE

The defensive unit continues its maturity process while having just four returning starters. Landon Hopkins enters his second season at defensive end capable of defending to the boundary as well as making tackles for minus yardage. Rowdy Hemphill (5-10, 190, So.) will bring intensity from the edge at outside linebacker while Kyler Woods (5-8, 200, So.) will fill the inside gaps at linebacker. The Wildcats enter the 2023 season with a swarming secondary that will be led by Bryson Stowe (5-10, 155, So.) at free safety. The schedule will be kind to the Wildcats who will play its way into district competition readiness playing in front of the hometown crowd in three of their first four contests this fall. “This is a very hard working group that have bought into the process,” said Carter. “I’m impressed with the competitive spirit of this group that won’t make excuses and always look to improve every day.”
