Atoka’s Teagan Joseph – Cheer Spotlight – Presented by Stuteville Ford of Atoka

TEAGAN JOSEPH-ATOKA CHEER

Dedication to cheering would be a good way to describe the high school career of Atoka senior Teagan Joseph. She doesn’t play any other sports and isn’t involved in other school clubs but being focused on cheer has been pretty rewarding for her.

“I grew up watching my siblings play in the band. I wasn’t really interested in that, so when I went to the football games to see them,I was focused on the cheerleaders and I learned all the dances and got into cheer in the sixth grade and have been doing it ever since,” said Teagan.

“She loves the Friday Night Lights and is sad to see the last ones here. She likes basketball but football is really her thing,” said Teagan’s coach Shawnte Washington, herself an Atoka alum who has been involved in cheer coaching for 24 years including coaching her three daughters. “She has made All-American every year and last year she got to be in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York. She’s been a team captain the past two years and is becoming an excellent team leader for us this year.”

Teagan says that focusing on her leadership role is one of her main goals for her senior season.

“I feel like I’ve become a better leader this year in getting people to come together as a group. This year I would also like to help get more people involved in sports and athletics here at Atoka.”

While she has several accolades she could talk about, Teagan says some of her summer camp experiences stick in her mind the most.

“For me it’s not so much about the details of the camps but it’s about watching how all of my teammates have matured over the years and yes, we did have some fun times at camp too,” she laughed.

So what is the thing that you like most about cheering?

“Being LOUD,” she explained. “It’s an excuse to yell and that’s my favorite part about it.”

“And that’s no lie,” added Washington laughing.

College is next up for Teagan after this last year at Atoka where she plans to pursue a degree in elementary education.
