Durant’s Callaway Nabors – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by First United Bank

CALLAWAY NABORS-DURANT

Playing basketball was something that was probably inevitable for Durant High School senior Callaway Nabors.

“My dad played some high school basketball, and my mom was a good basketball and softball player who could have played either in college but chose to pursue softball, so I guess playing basketball was probably in the cards all along. “

He got along in basketball by being pretty tall for his age but as he got older that advantage started shrinking as did Callaway’s self-confidence.

“I wasn’t very good in middle school, and I was having second thoughts about sticking with basketball when I got to high school, but coach (Aaron) George came along, and I started enjoying it so much more. He and my parents are my main role models.”

Coach George was also instrumental in getting Callaway interested in another sport.

“I tried golf my freshman and sophomore years but wasn’t very good at it so coach George who is also the track coach got me interested in pole vaulting and I’ve learned to like it a lot,” said Nabors who has vaulted 9’-6” in practice but 8’6” is his best so far in meets.

“Callaway is a team leader, hard worker and the backbone of our team,” said George. “He has to play inside for us and defend against guys bigger than him most of the time, but he never complains. I think he’s capable of playing somewhere at the next level if he wants to. He’s one of several kids we have back this year that have played together all four years here and they’re a pretty close-knit group. Callaway is also a leader in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA.”

Callaway says that the words energetic, positive and adaptive are good words to describe his demeanor. As a senior leader, Callaway feels he is most effective through the way he plays the game.

“I think my biggest asset is setting a good example by going as hard as I can in practice and in games.”

As he moves into his final year of high school basketball, Callaway is optimistic about the upcoming season.

“I think this group of seniors that have played together so long will help us be a more competitive team this year and we also have some underclassmen that I think will help us as well,” said Nabors.

College lays ahead after high school for Callaway and he feels that given his classroom success, academics will probably be the route he follows.
