Durant’s Jeremiah Adams – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Simmons Bank

Jeremiah Adams, an agricultural education teacher at Durant High School and Durant Middle School, brings dedication and enthusiasm to his classroom. With his wife, Kayla Adams, who is also a teacher, they balance busy lives raising three children: Riggin, 11; Tinley, 7; and Dutton, 2. Together, they are committed to their students and the agricultural community.

For the past nine years, Adams has taught a range of classes from agricultural explorations to ag power and tech (welding) for 8th through 12th graders at Durant. Before joining Durant Public Schools, he spent three years teaching at Timberlake Public Schools in Helena, Oklahoma. His path to education was significantly influenced by his own high school ag teacher, Mr. Richard Thomas, and his ag professor at Murray State College, Mr. Brian Cothran. Reflecting on the impact they had on him, Adams shared, “I decided to be an ag teacher because of my high school ag teacher’s influence on my life and how it set the foundation for FFA. My ag instructors at Murray State College pushed me in the education direction and showed me the positive impact I could have on students through agricultural education.” He credits these mentors with encouraging him toward a career where he could make a positive impact on students.

Adams enjoys seeing his students succeed, whether inside the classroom or beyond it. He finds it fulfilling to watch them apply the skills learned in class to real-life situations. “I love when I see former students and hear about how something they learned in ag helped them in their career,” he said. Adams believes in building connections with his students and values the advice he received early in his career: “Allow your students to get to know you. Sometimes they forget we are human, too.”

Outside the classroom, Adams enjoys feeding cattle, deer hunting, and participating in his children’s activities. For him, the supportive community and administration at Durant make teaching enjoyable. “We are blessed at Durant to have the community, administration, and students that we have! They make our job fun!” Adams’s dedication to agricultural education and student success exemplifies his commitment to cultivating a love for agriculture and practical skills among his students.
