Hugo Buffaloes Basketball Team – Presented by Jay Hodge Dodge of Hugo

HUGO BUFFALOES

BOYS

Coach: DARNELL SHANKLIN

23-24 Record: 11-16

The Hugo Buffaloes boys basketball team enters the 2024 season ready for tough competition and prepared for growth. Led by head coach Darnell Shanklin, the team is young, with just two seniors, but boasts athleticism and determination. “Our team understands we’ll be playing more 4A, 5A, and 6A teams during the regular season than 3A teams,” said Shanklin, noting that the challenging schedule is designed to strengthen the Buffaloes as they head toward playoffs.

Senior guard Quincy Shelton is a key player and has been a force on varsity since his freshman year. Known primarily as a highly recruited D1 football player, Shelton’s basketball talent is equally impressive. “Because Quincy is highly recruited as a D1 football player, some people are forgetting about his basketball ability. He’s played on varsity since his freshman year and that’s rare at Hugo,” Shanklin said.

Supporting Shelton is sophomore Kayden Jones, a talented player known as “KD.” Jones is described by Shanklin as having a “smooth game” and a quiet but effective approach. With strong skills on both ends of the court and a dedication to academics, Jones has the potential to make a significant impact throughout his high school career.

Freshman Kamden Bostic (6-2) is another underclassman to watch. With a frame that allows him to play bigger than his years, Bostic excels in rebounding and finishing around the basket. Shanklin is excited about his ability to contribute early in his career: “His rebounding and ability to finish around the basket will allow him to play earlier than most sophomores in our program.”

Rounding out the team is senior Kevin Wallace. Wallace is recognized for his dedication, hard work, and leadership. “Kevin is the type of player every coach wants in their program,” Shanklin said. “He’s the example we talk to our young athletes about — a student athlete that performs in the classroom, as well as in athletics.”

Hugo’s 2024 season will be a test, but coach Shanklin and his players are ready for it. With Shelton’s senior leadership, Jones’s rising talent, Bostic’s physical presence, and Wallace’s inspiring example, the Buffaloes are laying the foundation for a strong year and future success. As they gear up for their intense schedule, Shanklin is confident that each game will prepare his young team for the opportunities ahead.
