Hugo’s Quincy Shelton – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by McCurtain County National Bank

Quincy Shelton’s athletic journey started with family. “I got started in sports when I was younger when my mother was my coach,” says the Hugo High School standout. Now a multi-sport athlete excelling in football, basketball, and show choir, Quincy’s determination and natural talent have earned him three Division I football offers from UNLV, UTSA, and Colorado State.

When asked about his biggest inspirations, Quincy points to his mother, alongside professional athletes Ja Morant and Justin Jefferson. “My mother inspired me to try and play all sports,” he says. Her influence, combined with his passion for competition, fuels his success across multiple arenas.

As a key player for Hugo’s basketball team, Quincy takes pride in his ability to defend and lead. “My role is to stop the other team’s best player, score the ball, and get my teammates involved,” he explains. Preparation is essential, and his weekly routine includes morning workouts and after-school practices, where he focuses on building chemistry with his team. “I prepare by working hard every day and playing with my teammates to understand their game.”

One of Quincy’s proudest moments came last season when he delivered a highlight-reel-worthy performance. “When I got my first poster dunk, and we won the district championship versus Silo, that was unforgettable,” he recalls. But the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “My most challenging moment was not performing well at the start of the game,” he admits. His strategy for overcoming those moments? “I overcame it by saying ‘next play’ in my head and forgetting about what already happened.”

For Quincy, representing his community is deeply meaningful. “It’s very important because it makes us play better and work harder to win and make the community proud,” he says. That sense of pride extends to his goals for this season: “My goals are to get to the state championship and help my teammates win a gold ball.”

Looking ahead, Quincy has big plans for his future. “I see myself in the NFL or NBA with a wife and kids,” he shares. As he continues to chase his dreams, Quincy offers this advice to younger athletes: “Trust God and work for what you want, even when you don’t feel like it.”

With his dedication, talent, and strong support system, Quincy Shelton is a shining example of perseverance and leadership at Hugo High School.
