Durant’s Lou Ann Lively – Teacher Spotlight – Presented by Simmons Bank

For 25 years, Lou Ann Lively has been an integral part of Durant High School, teaching Health Science I to students in grades 9 through 12. Her class introduces students to the health profession, and she draws on 16 years of experience in the medical field to provide real-world insights. “I teach the beginning of the Health Sciences, an introduction to the healthprofession,” Lou Ann shares, emphasizing her passion for preparing students for fulfilling careers.

Lou Ann’s journey into education began as a practical decision but evolved into a lifelong calling. “I wanted to have the same schedule as my children, but when I started teaching, I fell in love with education and all my kids,” she explains. The influence of her parents, who were also educators, played a key role in shaping her career path. “I saw how students loved my parents and how involved they were with all kids and the impact they made,” she reflects. Additionally, her high school Biology and Chemistry teacher, Mrs. Munholland, left a lasting impression. “I enjoyed all the classes she taught, and I try to remember the ways she taught me and how much fun I had with her.”

What Lou Ann treasures most about teaching is her connection with students. “The main thing I enjoy is my students. I love coming to school and watching them learn new skills,” she says. Her goal is to help them find future careers they will enjoy, and her classroom is a place where discovery and growth flourish.

Beyond the classroom, Lou Ann finds joy in spending time with her family. She and her husband, David, have two children, Blaklyn and Zack, who are married and live in Durant. Her grandchildren, Reis and Lynlie, are the light of her life. “I enjoy ALL things with my grandkids, shopping, and all sports that my students are involved in,” she says.

Lou Ann lives by the advice she received early in her career: “Enjoy every day, learn something new every day, and be kind.” Her dedication, warmth, and passion make her an invaluable part of Durant High School.
