Hugo’s Dakerrious Wilson – Baseball Spotlight – Presented by Jay Hodge Dodge of Hugo

Dakerrious Wilson, a senior at Hugo High School, is passionate about sports and cherishes time spent with friends and family. “I’m 17, I love playing sports, and I enjoy hanging out with friends and family,” he says. His journey in baseball began with inspiration from his older brother. “My big brother inspired me to play. Just watching him when I was little made me want to play, and I grew a passion for the game,” Dakerrious explains.

Team chemistry is a strong point for Dakerrious and his Hugo teammates. “I think the team chemistry is going to be great this year,” he says. “A lot of us have played with each other since we were little, and everybody is uplifting one another and not tearing each other down.” As a leader on the team, Dakerrious takes his role seriously. “My role on the team is to uplift everyone no matter how the game is going,” he adds.

This season, Dakerrious and his teammates have big goals. “Our goal is to win the district championship and make a playoff run,” he says. His preparation involves consistent hard work. “A typical week for me consists of driveline, tee work, and lifting.”

Despite setbacks, Dakerrious has persevered. “Tweaking my knee last year and not being 100 percent was pretty hard on me,” he recalls. However, he also highlights the unforgettable moments, like last season’s regional tournament. “Going to regionals last year is something I’ll always cherish.”

The Hugo community plays a crucial role in the team’s success. “Community support is everything to us. When the stands are packed and we get the win, there isn’t a better feeling.”

Looking ahead, Dakerrious is focused on his future. “In five years, I see myself graduating college and looking to start my own business,” he says. He plans to attend Southeastern and pursue a degree in business management. “After graduating, I plan on starting my own business,” he adds.

Dakerrious credits his growth to those around him. “Coach Scott Schier puts in countless hours to make sure we are ready for game days and helps us strive to be better men.” He’s also grateful for his family and faith. “I would like to thank God for giving me the ability and passion to play the game that I love and my friends and family for pushing me to be better.”
