Hugo’s Dakerrious Wilson – Baseball Spotlight – Presented by Jay Hodge Dodge of Hugo

Not every athlete discovers their passion for a sport on their own—sometimes, inspiration comes from family. “My big brother inspired me to play,” said Hugo High School’s Dakerrious Wilson. “Just watching him when I was little made me want to play, and I grew a passion for the game.” That early influence turned into a deep love for baseball, shaping Wilson into a player who not only strives for personal success but also uplifts his team.

Wilson believes team chemistry will be a major strength this season. “I think the team chemistry is going to be great this year. A lot of us have played with each other since we were little, and everybody is uplifting one another and not tearing each other down,” he said. As a leader, he takes pride in being a source of encouragement. “My role on the team is to uplift everyone and make sure we don’t get down no matter how the game is going.”

The Buffaloes have high expectations this season, and Wilson has his eyes set on one goal in particular. “Our goal is to win the district championship and make a deep playoff run,” he said. His personal preparation reflects that ambition. “A typical week for me consists of driveline, bands, tee work, and lifting.”

Every athlete faces setbacks, and for Wilson, an injury was a tough hurdle to overcome. “Tweaking my knee last year and not being 100 percent was pretty hard on me,” he admitted. Despite that challenge, he found moments of triumph. “Going to regionals last year is something I’ll always cherish.”

Looking beyond baseball, Wilson has big plans for his future. “In five years, I see myself graduating college and looking to start my own business,” he said. His commitment to hard work extends beyond the field. “To be the best version of yourself, put in the extra hours when nobody is looking.”

Wilson is grateful for those who have supported him along the way. “I would like to thank God for giving me the ability and passion to play the game that I love, and I would also like to thank my friends and family for pushing me to be better.”
