Atoka’s Sarah Barton – Softball Spotlight – Presented by McCurtain County National Bank

What does it take to be a standout on the softball field? For Sarah Barton, it starts with commitment and a love for the game that’s been growing since childhood. “I started playing softball when I was around five or six,” she said. “I’ve developed a deep love for the game.” That early passion helped shape her into a key contributor for Atoka, where she plays both pitcher and shortstop—with shortstop becoming her main focus.
“I’ve always loved the competitive nature of softball,” she said. “It’s a game that requires both physical and mental strength, and that really inspired me to push myself further.” That mindset has helped Sarah push through tough practices, tight games, and moments of doubt to grow into one of her team’s most reliable players.
Behind her success stands a strong support system. “My biggest influences have been my coaches and parents who have helped shape my skills and encouraged me to keep going, even through tough times.”
Sarah values more than just wins—she values her teammates. “The team chemistry this season is fantastic,” she said. “We’ve really come together, and everyone plays a key role in making sure we succeed as a unit.”
On the field, Sarah prepares for both of her positions with discipline. “As a pitcher, I prepare by working on my control and pitch selection… As a shortstop, I focus on agility and quick decision-making.” Mental preparation is just as important, and she works hard to be ready for whatever the game throws her way.
Her most memorable moment? “When we were playing the Firelake Festival… we didn’t play the best, but we still put a lot of effort against some good teams.”
Looking ahead, Sarah has big dreams. “In five years, I hope to continue playing softball at the collegiate level and pursue my education at the same time.”
And through it all, the Atoka community has remained a powerful presence. “When the community shows up to cheer us on, it motivates us to give our best effort.”
