Durant’s Kinsley James – Golf Spotlight – Presented by Cherokee Communications

What starts as a strategy can quickly turn into a passion. For Durant High School senior Kinsley James, that’s exactly what happened when she first picked up a golf club. “I initially showed interest in golf because I was trying to plan ahead and heard that women’s golf scholarships were a good path,” Kinsley said. “However, I quickly fell in love with the sport and have been dedicating myself to it ever since.”
Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially among her teammates, who look to Kinsley not only for her steady swing but also for her leadership. “As a senior, it is my job to be a good example both on and off the course,” she said. “I’ve even been named ‘Coach KJ’ among the team.”
Kinsley’s impact goes beyond the greens. She leads by lifting others up. “For me, it’s keeping everyone’s spirits up and helping them understand their struggles,” she explained. “It brings me so much joy to see the happiness and support that my grandpa and mom have shown me through this journey, and seeing and helping my teammates improve with me heightens our bond.”
Even with limited access to a practice course, Kinsley and her team have adapted. “The closest one to us is Chickasaw Point in Kingston… so we only have two days a week to practice on a course,” she said. “The rest of the week, we’re practicing in the field house or on the turf.”
This season, her mindset is focused on soaking it all in. “My goals and hopes for this season are honestly just to enjoy it while it lasts,” she said. “Some of my teammates are so focused on winning state that they are not having fun.”
Looking ahead, Kinsley plans to attend East Central University. “Even though I love the sport with my whole heart, my education is my main priority,” she said. “But ECU happens to be basically on the Oak Hills Golf Course, so I can always play whenever I want.”
Whether on the course or in the classroom, Kinsley James continues to lead with heart.
