For Sandra McFarland, the classroom has always been a place of connection, discovery, and challenge. “I wanted to help students love math as much as I do,” she said. That passion for the subject has carried her through years of teaching and now into her sixth year at Durant High School.
McFarland teaches AP Precalculus, Honors Algebra II, and Honors Geometry, where she’s found joy in watching her students thrive. “Being able to see student’s mathematical growth and how they react when they do well,” she said, is one of the most rewarding parts of her career.
Her journey as an educator span across states and grade levels. “I have taught at high schools in Arkoma, Stigler, Wetumka, Madill, and adjunct at Seminole State College (all in Oklahoma), Fred Florence Middle School in East Dallas, and taught grades 7-12 in Alaska Villages for ten years,” McFarland explained. Each stop along the way shaped her approach to teaching and reinforced her commitment to helping students succeed.
She also carries with her lessons from those who influenced her own path. “Most influence by my high school math teacher, Mr. Calvin Tooley,” McFarland said. His impact continues to guide her in the way she supports and encourages her students today.
Even with years of experience, the best advice she’s received still rings true in her classroom. “Sometimes you have to give up control to gain control and respect your students even when they aren’t ready to respect others,” she said.
Beyond the classroom, McFarland finds joy in the simple things that bring balance to her life. “Gardening, reading, enjoying family time,” she said, are favorite pastimes that keep her grounded.
Family is a central part of her story as well. “I have three adult children: two daughters and a son (who passed away) and two adult grandchildren,” she shared.
Her perspective on kindness is something she strives to live out daily. “Sometimes the people that make it difficult to be kind need it the most,” McFarland said.
Through her dedication, experience, and compassion, Sandra McFarland continues to leave a lasting mark on Durant High School and its students.
