Hugo’s Keara Nelson – Cheer Spotlight – Presented by Ed Wallace Ford of Hugo

For Hugo High School senior Keara Nelson, cheerleading isn’t just about performing—it’s about building something lasting. “Our team morale has definitely improved a lot from the past year. We have had a great group of freshmen who have brought so much positive energy to the team; two new coed boys, and a new assistant coach who pushes us to be the best we can be,” she said. That growth has turned the Buff cheer squad into one of the most motivated groups she’s ever been a part of.

Nelson’s personal approach to the season reflects her determination. “My personal goals heading into this season are to always do my part and keep a positive attitude,” she explained. That outlook helps her keep herself and her teammates steady no matter the circumstances.

The results are already showing. “The biggest improvement I’ve seen so far is the work ethic and attitude of the team. We want to show what we are capable of at our competition this year,” Nelson said.

For this squad, the end goal is clear. “I think the team’s main goal is to do our best at competition and become state champions. We are working to achieve this by coming at 6 a.m. nearly every day and getting in extra reps of our stunts whenever we can.”

Their hard work is matched by new strengths. “I think our team’s biggest strength right now is our coed. We have had several football players join the team and they have been really putting in the work and they are ready to show off their skills at competition,” she said.

As a senior, Nelson takes pride in being a steady presence. “I always try my best to encourage the team. Even when we are having a bad practice or not hitting our stunts, I try to keep the energy positive and not let those things get us down.”

That positivity is what she hopes will remain after she graduates. “I want people to remember me for my positive outlook and school spirit,” she said.

From early morning practices to late nights of preparation, Nelson’s dedication has shaped her time at Hugo. And as she prepares for her future at Oklahoma State University, she carries that same determination into her next chapter.
