Antlers’ Preston Cannon – Football Spotlight – Presented by McCurtain County National Bank

PRESTON CANNON-ANTLERS

Antlers junior Preston Cannon enters his third season of varsity football with a new sense of dedication according to his new coach Kenon White. “Since I’ve taken over the program, Preston has really bought in to what we want to do here. He had one of the best summers I’ve ever had a kid have. He worked out every day with the team from 6:30-8:30 and then most times did extra work until noon or so. He started the summer at 335 pounds and is now down to 310. Right now,he’s playing left tackle for us but I’m considering moving him to guard to give us more size inside,” In his early years, Preston was a wrestler until some friends of his got him to try football in the eighth grade. “I gave it a try and really liked it, so I quit wrestling and devoted all my time to football after that,” said Preston. “I found that football gave me something to look forward to and a way to let energy out of my body in a healthy way. I like that football brings me closer to the group around me and creates relationships unlike any other because it doesn’t matter where you’re from or what your family circumstances, we come to the field and work hard to create a bond that inspires us.” Preston says he didn’t have to look far to find a role model that has had a big impact on his football career. “The person that’s always helped me the most has been my mom. Anytime I’m having problems that affect me on or off the field or that cloud my head when I’m playing, my mom is able to talk me through things and give me advice. She’s driven me to tons of camps and never misses a game.” As he thinks about his time at Antlers, Preston focused on one game that is a highlight for him. “I remember the first game I got to start in my freshman year against Hugo and that was really special.” Perhaps the biggest challenge for Preston also demonstrates his knack for leadership as well. “I think the biggest challenge is staying focused and disciplined to your assignment even when you’re under pressure and making sure those around you are doing likewise to make a play successful.” In addition to football, Preston is also involved in FCA at Antlers High and is active in his church. In his spare Preston says he likes to play games with friends and family, fish and watch football on TV.
