ATOKA WAMPUS CATS

BOYS

Coach: SAM ACKERMAN

23-24 Record: 16-9

With a balanced blend of returning experience and fresh talent, head coach Sam Ackerman is optimistic about what lies ahead for his team. “We have a good mix of older and younger players this upcoming season,” he said. “Being my first year with the team, I expect some growing pains early, but I am excited with the amount of talent we have.” Despite potential adjustments, coach Ackerman is confident that the Wampus Cats will rise to the challenges.

The team’s top returning scorers, Jake Wilkins (Sr.) and Prince Coleman (6-3, Sr.), will be pivotal in shaping Atoka’s offense. “Our top returning scorers are Jake Wilkins at 7.9 and Prince Coleman at 5.5. A lot of guys will take on new roles this season,” coach Ackerman explained. Alongside Wilkins and Coleman, seasoned players like LJ Lafaver (Sr.), JD Bland (Sr.), and Malachi Brooks (Jr.) bring valuable experience to the court, having all started at some point last season.

Adding depth to the team are younger players, including Logan Phillips (So.), a versatile underclassman known for his ball-handling skills and playmaking. “Logan is a skilled, long guard who loves the game,” Ackerman shared. This new generation of Wampus Cats talent offers a combination of athleticism and enthusiasm that could make for a highly competitive season.

Another player Ackerman is eager to see in action is Malachi Brooks. “Malachi is extremely athletic and a hard worker,” he said. “He spent this summer improving his jump shot and looks to take on a bigger role this season.” As the Wampus Cats aim for a successful campaign, this underclassman is poised to make an impact on both ends of the floor.

Key leaders like LJ Lafaver will be vital for the team’s chemistry and morale. Coach Ackerman praises Lafaver’scompetitive spirit and commitment. “LJ is an extremely competitive guard whose only goal is to win. He’ll do all the little things and is an important part of our season,” Ackerman said.

With an exciting mix of veteran players and promising newcomers, the Atoka Wampus Cats look forward to a season of growth, resilience, and fierce competition in 2024.
