CANEY COUGARS

BOYS

Coach: JAMES PANNELL

23-24 Record: 11-16

The Caney Cougars boys basketball team, led by first-year Head Coach James Pannell, is entering the 2024-25 season with a talented, experienced roster aiming to surpass last year’s 11-16 record. With a seasoned lineup, Coach Pannell is hopeful about the team’s potential, though he recognizes the adjustment period as they adapt to a new system. “I’ll have an older team with quite a bit of experience. This will be my first year at Caney, so I am expecting that it will take us time to install and get accustomed to a new system and a new way of doing things,” said Pannell. “If we get good buy-in and commitment, we have enough talent to have a winning season.”

The Cougars are led by a strong senior class, each bringing leadership and experience to the court. Zach Bagby (5-8, 140, Sr.), a skilled guard, will be instrumental in orchestrating the offense alongside Blake Vaughn (5-10, 165, Sr.), who is known for his ability to score and distribute. Cooper Willis (6-3, 170, Sr.), with his size and versatility, will be a key presence in both the post and the perimeter, while Migel Mendoza (5-9, 170, Sr.) provides a solid all-around game, contributing on both ends of the floor. Blain Harbin (6-1, 210, Sr.) offers strength in the paint and is expected to be a dominant force under the basket. Rounding out the senior leadership is Adin Crites (5-6, 120, Sr.), who will add depth to the backcourt. This senior class will be vital in establishing the tone for the season.

The junior class also has some exciting talent, including Colby Hodge (5-9, 190, Jr.). Hodge is a powerful and skilled post player who excels in scoring in the paint. Coach Pannell describes him as “short but highly effective inside,” emphasizing his strength as a finisher. Hodge’s ability to dominate in the post will be crucial for the Cougars this season. Other juniors, such as Hagen Ables (5-7, 140, Jr.) and Trevor Jackson (5-7, 135, Jr.), will bring speed and energy to the backcourt, giving the Cougars added depth.

Sophomore Zane Bagby (5-10, 215, So.) will add strength to the post and provide another solid option for coach Pannell’s frontcourt rotation.
