At Durant High School, amidst the hum of academic pursuit, Daven Daniel stands as a testament to the spirit of exploration and intellectual curiosity. As a junior, he’s navigated the corridors of knowledge with a keen eye for discovery.
“I joined the academic team in my freshman year,” Daven shared, reflecting on his initiation into the realm of scholastic competition. “I wanted to try as many things as possible to see what I wanted to do, and academic team was definitely one of them.”
In the annals of his academic journey, one moment stands out vividly: a post-meet celebration at Target orchestrated by Ms. Jackie McMichael, their mentor. It’s in these moments of camaraderie that the bonds of friendship are forged, transcending the confines of competition.
During competitions, Daven finds his stride in questions about food and cooking, an area where his expertise shines: “I know a lot in that area and I’m able to score points for my team.”
Preparation is key and Daven approaches each meet with diligence. “Before academic team meets, I like to go over questions from previous years with my team and tackle practice math questions,” he explained.
Through his journey with the academic team, Daven has found a community of like-minded individuals, both within his team and among competitors. “I’ve made so many wonderful friends on the team and from other schools.”
Despite the demands of his five extracurricular activities, Daven considers himself fortunate that their schedules rarely overlap. Yet, he acknowledges the persistent challenge of balancing study and practice amidst a busy schedule.
For those considering joining the academic team, Daven offers sage advice: “Don’t give up.” The initial hurdles may seem daunting, but with time and exposure to diverse subjects, improvement is inevitable.
Reflecting on his journey, Daven emphasizes the value of depth over breadth. “Being knowledgeable in a few areas is key,” he asserted.
