OUTLOOK

The Durant Lady Lions enter the 2025-2026 season with high expectations after reaching the Class 5A state quarterfinals last year — and they’re not backing down from the challenge. With all five starters returning and key contributors stepping up off the bench, head coach Tony Robinson believes this team’s experience and chemistry will set them apart.

“The Durant Lady Lions will return all five starters from a 5A state quarterfinals qualifier,” said Robinson. “Iyana Wilson will lead at point guard surrounded by guards Anslee Morse and Emma Green. Ella Sorrels and Abrianna Freeman will provide interior presence. Zoe Lee and Avery Blackburn will provide depth off the bench.”

At the heart of Durant’s attack is junior point guard Iyana Wilson (5-0), who averaged 12 points, five steals, and three assists per game. Wilson’s quickness and decision-making make her the engine of the Lady Lions’ offense. Alongside her is junior forward Ella Sorrels (5-8), who posted 13 points, six rebounds, and four steals a game — a force inside.

Robinson is confident in both his leaders, calling Wilson “a standout point guard who plays with an abundance of energy” and noting that “she sees the floor well and has a high basketball IQ.” As for Sorrels, Robinson praised her relentless approach: “Ella is a relentless player who gives 100% all the time. During the offseason, she has strengthened her left-hand skills, and she also has a high basketball IQ.”

Senior post Abrianna Freeman (5-10) adds strength inside, contributing eight points and six rebounds per game. Senior guard Emma Green (5-6) and junior guard Anslee Morse (5-6) round out the starting five, both known for their effort on both ends — Morse averaging four points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Off the bench, sophomore Avery Blackburn brings energy and growth potential after gaining valuable experience as a freshman. “Avery saw some playing time as a freshman and will be the first guard off the bench this year,” said Robinson. “She is a hard worker who’s eager to learn and improve her skills.”

With their returning depth, balanced scoring, and veteran leadership, the Lady Lions are poised to make another deep postseason run — and coach Robinson knows this group has what it takes to keep climbing in Class 5A.
