Stella Rhynes, a junior at Durant High School, embodies the drive and versatility that define the Lions’ Academic Team. As a three-year veteran, the 11th-grader thrives in the fast-paced quiz competitions, drawing inspiration from coach Jackie McMichael.
Rhynes gravitates toward English, her favorite subject, where she immerses herself in reading and writing. “My AP U.S. History teacher, Mrs. Wyrick, is my favorite teacher because she challenges and encourages me more than anyone else,” Rhynes said. This mentorship fuels her growth, mirroring the team’s emphasis on collaboration and individual study.
She joined the Academic Team as a freshman, embracing the challenge of quiz-show-style questions on math, literature, history and current events. “I enjoy being pushed outside of my comfort zone and making new friendships,” she noted. The team practices weekly, honing strengths like those Rhynes brings to the table, as recognized by underclassmen who learn from her.
Beyond academics, Rhynes leads as a section leader in the Pride of Durant Band, balancing rehearsals with team prep. Her hobbies reflect a creative spark: “I absolutely love to read, I almost always have a book in my hand, as well as building Legos and embroidering.” These pursuits sharpen her focus for competitions against rivals like Noble.
Rhynes admires teammate Natalie Freedman, a senior, “because she puts forth the most effort to make everyone feel included.” This team spirit propels Durant through a competitive season.
Rhynes has earned accolades, including third place in English II and first in Spanish I at the Southeastern Curriculum Contest. Her competitive edge positions Durant strongly in statewide events.
Looking ahead, Rhynes eyes the University of Oklahoma’s Gaylord College of Journalism. “I plan to attend the University of Oklahoma’s college of journalism in hopes to become a successful writer,” she said. Coach McMichael’s influence resonates: “My coach Ms. McMichael inspires me, not just to be a better player, but to be an encouraging and reliable teammate.”
Rhynes exemplifies Durant’s commitment to academic excellence, blending intellect, leadership and heart on the path to future success.
