Durant’s Elisabet Garcia – Teacher Spolight – Presented by Simmons Bank

Every classroom has its own rhythm, and for Elisabet Garcia, that rhythm is often set to the cadence of Spanish verbs and the click of a camera shutter. For the past eight years, Garcia has been making a lasting impression on students at Durant High School. “I teach Spanish II and I’m the yearbook adviser to 10th–12th graders,” she said with pride.

Her passion for teaching didn’t begin in adulthood—it’s been growing since childhood. “It was always something I wanted to do as a little girl,” Garcia shared. “Also, watching my mom teach little preschool-aged kids and seeing how much she made a difference in their lives was a legacy I wanted to leave as well.”

Garcia’s journey in education began just over the state line. “I taught Spanish I and II at Bells High School in Bells, Texas, for one year,” she said. Since then, Durant has been home.

While her classroom focuses on language and storytelling, she credits two teachers from her own school days for shaping her path. “My third-grade teacher, Shearl Davis, and my junior high Spanish teacher, Mrs. Vanessa Johns,” Garcia said. “They made a big impact on me.”

For Garcia, the joy of teaching is rooted in the connections she makes. “I enjoy the relationships I’ve built with my kids and how excited they get when I’ve taught them something and they get it,” she said. That excitement, she believes, is the heart of good teaching.

When asked about advice that’s stuck with her, she didn’t hesitate. “Be consistent,” Garcia said.

Away from school, her world is full of music, faith, and family. “I enjoy spending time with my family and my dog, Osito, and singing at church,” she said. Osito—Spanish for “little bear”—is her miniature poodle and constant companion.

Gratitude also guides her life and her work. “God is good, and I feel blessed He has given me an opportunity to be a small part in my students’ lives,” Garcia said.
