Durant’s Katelyn Mauck – Soccer Spotlight – Presented by Pine Cellular

When Durant High School senior Katelyn Mauck steps back onto the soccer field this spring, it means more than just the start of another season — it marks the culmination of months of recovery, determination and resilience.
“I suffered an ACL tear at the beginning of last season, so my main goal this season is to fully return,” Mauck said. “I want to not only regain my touch and skills, but also continue improving them.”
That determination has fueled both her comeback and her leadership on a team defined by chemistry and optimism. “The team morale this year has been very positive,” she said. “Everyone is excited to start the season fresh, and we all really enjoy getting to play together.”
Despite the loss of key seniors from last year’s squad, Mauck says the Lady Lions have carried their momentum into this season. “We’re still pretty early in the season, but I feel that we’ve already made some improvements in how we play together compared to last season,” she said. “While we lost some talented seniors, a lot of our core group is still here, so our chemistry on the field has only been improving.”

A versatile athlete, Mauck has filled several roles for Durant. “I’ve never really had one set position,” she said. “I’ve played forward, wing, center mid and outside back. I’m open to playing wherever the team needs me.”
Her approach to the game is deeply analytical. “I usually read the defensive line by observing their positioning and body language to plan my next move,” she said. “It really just takes patience because you don’t want to dive and risk losing the ball, but you also want to be on your toes ready for something to happen at any moment.”
Her love for the sport extends beyond wins and statistics. “My goal isn’t necessarily to be the type of player that everyone remembers because of skill,” Mauck said. “Rather, I hope to be remembered for my passion for the game and for inspiring and encouraging others through my actions.”
That passion continues to energize her teammates. “One of our biggest strengths as a team is our passion for the game,” she said. “Everyone has been excited to come to practice and get better.”
