Durant’s Natalia Freeman – Academic Team Spotlight – Presented by Pine Cellular

Some competitors thrive under pressure, finding confidence not in speed alone but in preparation and purpose. For Natalia Freeman, being part of the Durant High School Academic Team has become exactly that kind of experience. “I became involved with the Academic Team after hearing about it and developing an interest in the activity,” she said. “At the time, Ms. Jackie McMicheal was my teacher, and she encouraged me to attend a practice. I have been a member of the team ever since.”
Within the fast-paced environment of academic competition, Natalia has discovered where she feels most comfortable. “Whenever I do compete, I feel most confident in American History and Pop culture!” That confidence is built through consistency, as the team prepares with intention each week. “Our team practices weekly by answering previously asked questions to become familiar with the format, as many competition questions are similar in style.”
Natalia plays an important behind-the-scenes role that helps keep everything running smoothly. “During practice, I read questions and operate the buzzers,” she explained. “During competitions, I am responsible for keeping score, ensuring that all correctly answered questions are accurately recorded.” It’s a responsibility that requires focus, especially in the most intense moments. “One of the biggest challenges in fast-paced matches is keeping up with the rapid flow of questions.”
Success in those moments depends heavily on connection. “Teamwork and communication are crucial to success, especially during 60-second rounds,” Natalia said. “Clear communication allows the team to identify individual strengths and weaknesses in order to maximize points.” That shared effort has helped create some unforgettable memories along the way. “One of the most memorable moments of this season has been the van rides home from competitions, which created lasting memories that I will miss when the season ends.”
Beyond competition, Academic Team has made a meaningful impact on her daily life. “Being on the Academic Team has also helped me stay more focused in the classroom, as I am motivated to retain information and contribute to the team.” She hopes future students approach the experience with the same mindset. “The advice I would give to future students interested in joining the Academic Team is not to stress,” she said. “It is okay to miss a few questions—confidence and enjoyment are important parts of the experience.”
As the semester continues, Natalia remains focused on the present. “My goal for the remainder of the semester is to make the most of my time on the team and perform to the best of my ability.”
Natalia Freeman is a senior at Durant High School, involved in Fusion Bible’s Youth Group, and plans to attend Southeastern Oklahoma State University, where she will major in accounting.
