Hugo’s Carissa McComb-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Jay Hodge Dodge

A fire baton routine at the Oklahoma FFA State Convention gave Carissa McComb a moment she will always remember.

Of everything she has experienced in high school, the Hugo senior said performing that routine is the accomplishment she is proudest of. It reflected the confidence she has developed through band and color guard.

“Band has taught me leadership and how to be outgoing with strangers, which is a lesson I will not forget,” McComb said. “I love helping others, and this helps with that.”

McComb credits a former color guard captain, Bell, with helping her when she first joined. Bell taught her what she needed to know before tryouts and became the kind of leader McComb wanted to follow.

“She stood as a role model to me when I first joined color guard and set an example I won’t forget,” McComb said.

That desire to help others reaches beyond performances. McComb serves as FFA chaplain and overall secretary of the HHS Student Council. She is also involved in YAB, Interact Club, Book Club, academic bowl, art, honor society and the skeet shooting team. She occasionally works with the Hugo Chamber of Commerce on community projects, including repainting buildings. In her free time, she enjoys playing pickleball.

Her art teacher, Ms. Frost, has been a steady source of encouragement through good and difficult days.

“She has been there for me through rough days and has supported me unconditionally,” McComb said.

McComb appreciates living in a town that shows up for its students. She said Hugo’s support for its schools and local events creates a spirit that makes the community special.

She tries to add to that spirit by remembering some of the best advice she has received: “Your mood is contagious.” McComb said wearing a smile has helped her surround herself with friends and peers who are happy and fun to be around.

As graduation approaches, McComb is grateful for everyone who helped her become the student and leader she is today. She thanked her teachers, band directors, parents and grandmother for their unwavering support and advice. Their encouragement, along with the lessons she has learned through service and performance, has prepared her to keep leading with confidence, kindness and a smile.
