Kingston’s Madi Hammond-Athlete Spotlight

Kingston High School sophomore Madi Hammond embraces the fast pace and constant challenges of softball, whether she is making a split-second play in the infield, pitching or stepping to the plate as a switch hitter and slapper.

Hammond plays third base, shortstop, second base and right-handed pitcher for the varsity team. Third base presents a particularly demanding challenge because quick decisions are essential.

“The most difficult I’d have to say is that there’s little reaction time at 3rd base. You have to trust your instincts and preparation because the ball can be on you before you have time to think. It could be a hard line drive one minute to charging a bunt the next. I enjoy the fast pace though!”

Her approach reflects the lesson she values most in softball: teammates need support, particularly after mistakes. Hammond said an encouraging attitude can make a difference in how a player responds to adversity.

“There’s so many… I would have to say always have an uplifting attitude and be encouraging to your teammates at all times. Especially when they strike out of do something wrong. They already know they messed up. Uplift your team and encourage them to stay in the game mentally. How you come back from a situation or fix it is what’s important.”

Hammond said friendships and the team’s bond make competing meaningful. She also tries to contribute as a vocal teammate, while teammate Destry Davis provides humor around the group.

Away from high school softball, Hammond plays for 18U Royalty Fastpitch-Soliz, traveling to exposure tournaments in multiple states. She plays second base, shortstop and center field with the travel team and hopes to continue her softball career in college.

Jayda Coleman is one of Hammond’s role models because of the way she approaches the sport and supports those around her.

“She inspires me to be better. She’s a great role model because she plays with energy, confidence, and toughness, and she loves the game. She uplifts her teammates, always has a smile on her face and most importantly gives all the credit to God.”

Hammond stays involved beyond softball as a member of the high school shooting team, a varsity cheerleader and a weightlifting participant. She is also active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Future Farmers of America. In the classroom, math is her favorite subject, and she cites Coach Hayes, who taught her as a freshman, as her favorite teacher.
