Durant’s Aaron George – Coach Spotlight – Presented by Simmons Bank

Durant High School’s athletic programs are driven by a deep well of experience, heart, and consistency—and at the center of much of that is Aaron George. For over a decade, George has served as both a PE teacher and multi-sport coach at DHS. “I teach 9-12 PE, boys’ basketball, and girls and boys track,” he said. This is his eleventh year at Durant.

Family is a constant motivator in his life. George and his wife, Amy, share a close-knit family of four children—Ethan, Haley, Jared, and Tate—and three grandchildren. His values stem from that foundation, and he brings the same energy to his students that he does to his own family. “Spending time with family is what I enjoy most when I’m not teaching,” he said.

George’s path to education was inspired early on. “My mom was an educator and I enjoyed watching her help kids,” he said. “She was always at the school!” That example helped shape a future of service. His career has taken him through several school systems—Calhoun City and Deer Creek Arcola in Mississippi, Crowell in Texas, and Kingston and Madill in Oklahoma—before landing in Durant.

Through it all, he’s held onto one simple truth. “If you care for the student, they will see that and try to do what you ask them to do,” George said. That wisdom has defined his approach in both the classroom and on the court.

For George, the most rewarding part of his job isn’t just about sports or grades. “Helping and watching kids improve as a person,” he said, is what drives him day in and day out.

He still recalls the teachers who invested in him and helped him believe in his potential. “All teachers were helpful and wanted me to succeed,” he said. Now, he strives to pay that forward to every student and athlete he works with.

“I’m thankful for all the opportunities I have had,” George said. “I hope to keep making a positive impact on student-athletes.”
