The field and court no longer feel ordinary to Kamrey Hendricks. After three major surgeries in three years, every chance to compete means more.
The Silo Public Schools senior plays softball and basketball.
“Each surgery taught me to be patient, work hard, and never give up,” Hendricks said. “Going through those setbacks has made me appreciate every opportunity I get to step back on the field or court and compete.”
One of her favorite memories came during her freshman year, when Silo won the slow-pitch state championship. Sharing it with her teammates made the achievement meaningful.
Sports have taught Hendricks to stay composed when situations turn difficult.
“One of the biggest lessons I have learned through sports is how to stay positive even in negative situations,” she said. “Sports aren’t always easy, and things don’t always go the way you want them to, but I’ve learned that your attitude and how you respond can make a huge difference.”
Mrs. Proctor, Hendricks’ favorite teacher, reinforced the value of accepting support.
“She helped me realize that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own, and that is something that has stuck with me,” Hendricks said.
Teammate Avery Beauchamp has influenced the way Hendricks approaches softball and life.
“She showed me that softball is so much more than just a sport and that everything we do is for the glory of God,” Hendricks said.
Faith remains important to Hendricks away from competition. She participates in FCA and Beta and attends Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mead. She values her hometown, where people feel like family.
Her outlook reflects the advice she carries with her: “You can go as far as you want to go if you’re willing to work for it.”
Hendricks credits her parents for supporting her through every stage. She is also grateful to Jeff Hughes, John Webb, her coaches and teammates for preparing, encouraging and challenging her.
“You all have made such an impact on my life and given me memories and friendships I will always carry with me,” Hendricks said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without all of you, and I am so thankful for every person who has been a part of my journey.”
