Hugo’s Sam Perez – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Jay Hodge Dodge

Tennis isn’t something that’s always been there at Hugo High School. For Sam Perez, that’s exactly what made it appealing.

“The first thing that really interested me was that it was a sport that hasn’t been in Hugo for a while,” Perez said. “I wanted to help build the program back up.”

Now a junior, Perez has taken on that challenge, becoming part of a group working to reestablish the program. Being part of something that’s still growing has given him a different perspective than most athletes.

Along the way, he’s found pride in representing his school and the example he sets for others.

“What I enjoy about representing my school is being a positive example for others and showing pride in where I come from and what I do,” he said.

Perez mainly competes in doubles, where having a partner brings a different kind of energy to each match. The communication and support between teammates is something he values.

“I like doubles because I have a team member next to me encouraging me through the game,” he said.

His strength at the net has become a key part of his game, allowing him to stay aggressive and finish points. At the same time, he’s worked to improve his consistency and shot placement, focusing on limiting mistakes and keeping rallies under control.

Before stepping onto the court, Perez keeps his routine simple. He focuses on staying calm, thinking positively, and listening to music to get locked in.

“Before a big match, I just think positive and stay calm and relaxed,” he said.

That mindset shows up most in close matches. One of his most memorable moments this season came in his first singles appearance, which turned into a tight contest that went to a tiebreaker.

“Even though I didn’t win, it was a really good match,” he said.

He said his coach, Mrs. White, has played a big role in helping him improve and stay focused throughout the season. Off the court, Perez makes it a priority to stay on top of his schoolwork so he can give his full attention to tennis when it’s time to compete.

Looking ahead, Perez has clear goals. He wants to place at regionals and qualify for state, continuing to build both his own game and the program around him.

More than anything, tennis has taught him perseverance.

“You can never give up,” Perez said. “Even when it looks like you’ve lost, there’s always another chance.”

For Perez, that lesson goes beyond the court. It’s part of what drives him as he helps bring tennis back to Hugo, one match at a time.
