
VYPE: What first interested you in tennis, and how long have you been playing?
Ja’Miya Johnson: Tennis seemed fun and it would keep me active. This is my second year playing.
VYPE: What grade are you in, and what do you enjoy about representing your school?
JJ: I’m a senior. I like being able to help give Hugo a better name.
VYPE: Do you prefer singles or doubles, and why?
JJ: I mostly play singles. I like singles because it makes me work harder.
VYPE: What would you say is your biggest strength on the court?
JJ: I’m good at hitting deep baseline shots.
VYPE: What is one area of your game you are working to improve?
JJ: I’m trying to be more comfortable being at the net.
VYPE: How do you keep yourself focused during matches?
JJ: I tell myself to have fun and focus on hitting good shots.
VYPE: What is one of your favorite memories in tennis so far?
JJ: One of my favorite memories is when my doubles partner and I won our match together.
VYPE: What does a typical practice look like for you?
JJ: A typical practice starts with running laps around the courts. After that we sometimes do the ball machine, work on our serves, or play each other.
VYPE: What has tennis taught you beyond the sport itself?
JJ: Tennis has taught me to be patient. It has also taught me to not give up on myself.
