Silo High School sophomore Katelyn Mueller is building a strong foundation both in the classroom and on the cheer mat, guided by discipline, perseverance and the influence of those closest to her.
Mueller, a 10th-grade student, credits her parents as her biggest inspiration. Watching them overcome challenges and maintain a strong work ethic has shaped her own approach to life.
“I think I’m blessed to have a lot of people in my life who inspire me, but most of all my parents,” Mueller said. “Watching them overcome challenges and work hard motivates me to do the same.”
That mindset carries into her role on the varsity cheer team, where she serves as a backspot in stunting. The position requires strength, awareness and trust qualities Mueller continues to develop through consistent effort.
While the physical demands of cheer are significant, Mueller says the relationships she has built stand out the most.
“The games and practices are fun, but the team is what makes it a blast,” she said. “Without cheer, I wouldn’t have met some of the friendliest, best people in my life.”
Two teammates in particular — Audrey and Mylie — have made a lasting impact. Mueller said they helped her feel welcome during her freshman year and set an example both in skill and character.
“They showed me what it looked like to be an amazing cheerleader, not only with their ability but with how they handled difficult situations with a great attitude,” she said.
Off the mat, Mueller thrives academically, especially in English. She enjoys reading and writing and points to her eighth-grade teacher, Mrs. Franks, as a key influence in fostering that passion.
Outside of school, Mueller stays active with hobbies such as reading, learning to golf, going to the movies and spending time with friends. She also takes a thoughtful approach to preparing for each school year, focusing on small weekly goals during the summer to ease the transition back into a busy schedule.
Through cheer, Mueller has gained valuable life skills that extend beyond athletics.
“It has taught me discipline by helping me follow through on my responsibilities,” she said.
“It has also taught me perseverance by encouraging me to keep trying even when things are difficult.”
With a strong support system and a clear sense of purpose, Mueller continues to grow as both a student and athlete.
