Junior shortstop and pitcher Jake McKay is focused on raising the bar in every part of his game for Caddo this season.
“Some of my personal goals are to have a better batting and fielding average than last year,” McKay said.
He said the Buffaloes’ clubhouse chemistry is one of the things that makes this group special. “We have good morale and are a tight bunch of guys,” McKay said.
That bond is fueling a familiar, lofty target. “Well, the ultimate goal is to win state, of course, and we are putting in extra time to get what we fell short of last year,” he said.
Experience, McKay added, is one of Caddo’s biggest advantages. “Our biggest strength, I would say, is how many we returned from last year that played a big role in our success last year,” he said.
On the field, McKay anchors the infield and contributes on the mound. “I play shortstop and pitcher,” he said.
At the plate, he studies the defense closely to find any edge. “I look to see where everyone is positioned and if the corners are in close or further back than usual,” McKay said.

His mentality each time he takes the field is simple and team centered. “When I step onto the field I just want to be able to compete and help my team to the best of my ability,” he said.
Looking ahead, McKay hopes his work ethic is what future Buffaloes remember most. “Want to be remembered as a guy that worked his tail off and put the team first,” he said.
One moment still stands out as the highlight of his Caddo career so far. “Favorite memory has to be when we won the game to go to state last year,” McKay said.
McKay’s production reflects the impact he has on the diamond. “.398 average, .890 fielding, basketball, baseball and football. My plan after high school is to hopefully play college baseball,” he said.
