Durant’s McKenzee Petty – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Cherokee Communications

McKenzee Petty has become one of the steadying forces for Durant tennis. The senior brings a calm presence, a strong work ethic and a mindset shaped by years of practice, patience and support from the people who have invested in her development.

“My dad got me first intreated in tennis when I was in 7th grade and I have been playing ever since then,” Petty said, a reminder that her love for competition started early and has stayed with her.

Petty primarily plays doubles, and that team-first approach fits her style of play. “I primarily play doubles,” she said. “I like the team aspect that is included the most. I love always having a partner to talk to, encourage, and share the experience with.” That bond has helped her build trust, communication and confidence in pressure moments, traits that carry over beyond matches.

One of Petty’s biggest strengths is her composure. “One strength in tennis that I take the most pride in is being able to keep my composure in tight situations,” she said. “It can be easy to get down or frustrated in tennis, so keeping a steady mental state is essential.”

Before big matches, Petty keeps her mindset simple. “I focus on staying calm and confident in my skills, rather than putting a bunch of pressure on myself,” she said. “I also remind myself to focus on what I can control during my match, like my effort and attitude.” During long matches, she zeroes in on “one point at a time,” while staying steady with her emotions and footwork.

Her biggest influences have been her parents along with her coach. “Both my parents and my tennis coach, Coach Rod, have had the biggest impact on my development as a player,” she said. “They have all taught me to give my best effort and remain classy and respectful not only as a player but as a person too.”

As a senior, Petty’s goals are clear: “to make it to state, place in the top five, and most importantly be the best teammate I can be and leave a positive impact on Durant tennis.”
